As I write this, Lia might be having her baby girl. At the time of our session she was full term, mentally ready to give birth and meet baby Hannah, but, although full-term, she still carried herself with a light-footed grace and ease. It was beautiful to watch the way she walked, her purple dress flowing softly with the wind, her eyes full of light and energy, her smile so radiant and captivating. So soft and beautiful.
Yet, in contrast to this picture of delicate femininity is a tattoo on her forearm. Not just a butterfly or flower, but a big tattoo... A serious tattoo. "We love because He first loved us." .... a weighty tattoo.
What I love about this woman, and her family, is the beauty, grace and gentleness, but also the gravity and seriousness about her life. See, Lia is an EMT, and even at 37 weeks pregnant, she's still at work, regularly saving lives. She's also the type of woman who has volunteered as a counselor, and has helped with flood victims, pouring herself out to help others... to encourage others... to share love and life with them. She is a quiet, gentle soul, engaged in hard-core, life-giving work day in and day out.
And so I absolutely love her tattoo, and what it means, and the light it sheds on this family and this pregnancy. "We love because He first loved us." You see, Lia's love for her family and her commitment to this new baby is a fierce, strong, and committed love in the package of a woman who's full of gentleness, patience and grace. And that's exactly a picture of how God loves us. It's an unwavering and powerful, yet patient and forgiving love.
"We love because He first loved us." Lia, may you continue to experience God's love for you throughout this journey of motherhood, and may your daughters grow to become women who also deeply experience the joy and satisfaction of knowing that first love.
